TEMPORARY QRT FROM 16 AUGUST - have had to return to Europe due to family illness. See NEW QSL info.

A92IO  IOTA AS-002  Kingdom of Bahrain

A92IO is now operational from Sar, Northern Region, Kingdom of Bahrain, LL56fe. Plans are to operate from Bahrain till at least August 2011.

Operations initially focussed on the bands 3.5 MHz to 30 MHz. It is intended to be QRV on 1.8 MHz for the 2010/2011 winter season. Furthermore, in March 2010 the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the Kingdom of Bahrain licensed the amateur service to operate in a number of new frequency bands e.g. 135.7-137.8 kHz, 1850 - 2000 kHz, 7100 - 7200 kHz, 50 - 52 MHz and in a number of allocations above 430 MHz. As a consequence A92IO is also QRV on 50 MHz.

Concerning 500 kHz, 5 MHz and 70 MHz, a recent TRA consultation with a closing date of 14 February 2010 sought, amongst other things, views on whether Bahraini amateur stations should be authorised to use spectrum in the vicinity of these frequencies for propagation experiments (see http://www.tra.org.bh). The results of this consultation have yet to be published.

The main station at A92IO comprises an Elecraft K3 and Acom 1000 amplifier. A Cushcraft R7 vertical, rotary dipole for 18 and 24 MHz together with wire antennas for 10 MHz and below, are used for transmitting. A few QSO’s have been made on 1.8 MHz with a 45 metre inverted V doublet fed with 400 ohm line; however a torroid in the ATU has been damaged. On 50 MHz a Cushcraft A50-6S 6 element yagi is used. Other antennas include a J Beam 4 element 70 MHz yagi fixed in a North Westerly direction and a Wellbrook 1530+ Magnetic Loop active receive antenna.
